National Competition Rules

Yes. Since registration and promotion are always associated with our 500 chapters, MATHCOUNTS works with local coordinators to recognize and provide trophies and other prizes to students and participants with the highest score at this level of competition. Information on this year`s topics for Bible categories, the topic of debate, updates or clarifications to the rules, and other important information can be found on the AACS website, the annual contest update, and the National Contest Manual (2020 edition). Since the chapter competition is online this year, the MATHCOUNTS country office will provide information about your chapter competition. Although the method of selecting your school`s teams is up to you, we recommend that you use an in-school competition to select regional participants. To help you in your intra-school competition, we have included materials used at regional and national level. Student results for the 2022 training competitions and chapter competition will be available on your coaching portal one week after the start date of each competition. A copy of the online training competitions is available at the same time. The NHSMTC Board has amended the competition rules to include rules for virtual competitions. The modified rules are below, in a red version and a clean copy.

When your school enters the FINAL, each team will be asked to provide two witnesses. We plan to host the contest in person in Fort Worth, Texas from Wednesday, March 30 to Sunday, April 3, 2022. If we were to change the final to a virtual format, the contest will continue to take place on the same dates. The results of the training competitions and the chapter competition will be available on your student portal one week after the start date of each competition. On average, students should expect to complete competitions within 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Once a student starts participating in the competition (starting with the approval of the honor code), he must complete the sprint round (40 minutes) and the finish rounds (4 laps / 6 minutes each). There are short breaks that take place (10 minutes between the sprint lap and the first pair of finish laps; 1 minute between each pair of finish laps), but students must complete the sprint and complete the laps in one session. In an online training competition with a team round component, the team round can be completed at a different time. For the chapter competition, the team round must be completed within the scheduled competition period. You must have been invited by your coach and have accepted the invitation to participate in MATHCOUNTS online training courses or official competitions.

If you have registered (paid) x students to participate in the MATHCOUNTS competition series via MATHCOUNTS, you can invite x+50 students to participate in online practice competitions. (If you have registered through MATHCOUNTS for up to 12 official participants, you can invite 62 students to participate in online practice competitions.) In January, a mandatory registration of the competition is only open to your official participants. Your official competitors should use this recording to test their internet connection and credentials and make sure they can see competition issues and images on their device. As there is no official team component at the chapter level, this year each student is considered an individual in the series of competitions. Promotion to the state competition is determined by individual scores in the chapter competition. However, the online practice competitions and chapter competition will have an optional team tour so that students can solve problems together, and we encourage coaches to provide as many opportunities for collaboration as possible during meetings and exercises. Coaches are advised to do the following things for official competitions to ensure a successful MATHCOUNTS competition season: The competition series is the main college math competition in the country. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some aspects of the program will be modified this year to ensure the safety of our students, coaches and volunteers.
